Less than impressive. Ideally I'd take a high frame rate video so I could do a slow motion of the crystal formation and propagation......but not knowing how long it would take for that point to be reached versus battery and memory, I opted for a timelapse. I caught the freezing but it flashes quickly at only 1 frame per 10 seconds. At a 30 fps playback it's over in a blink.
Hopefully we get another hard freeze this year....I'll do some thinking on how to do this better...also how to make the ice more visible with more contrast on the container or perhaps coloring the water..... (though that might effect the freezing point )
Yes. I am pretty sure that ended up being a secondary low that pulled in the cold air into what was already a pretty cold air mass. I want to say that the grand-daddy of all snows down here (the one that put 2 feet in Rayne) was a very cold arctic airmass that was followed by a low coming out of southwest Texas.
Help me make my weather site www.wxscout.com better - Please visit and IM me any feedback. Thanks.
Starting to see some indications in the longer range guidance suggesting a fairly significant pattern change arrives as we near the end of January. It appears a strong Ridge develops across the Gulf of Alaska with a very chilly upper trough invading the Western 2/3rds of the Nation suggesting cold and unsettled weather may return as we near our climatologically favorable period for winter weather lovers. Meanwhile enjoy the warm weather while we have it!

coffeecups: Just like that S word, whenever something is not hyped, then it will probably happen.

SKYSUMMIT: I'm thinking this hurricane season will keep us a little busy. Nothing scientific, but just the idea that it really hasn't been hyped that much.

coffeecups: That 'some rain on Friday' became a tornado about 3 miles away (as the crow flies). What a surprise! Glad I didn't have any flooding!

coffeecups: Came home to Harvey from Slidell. Had a little rain here and there. There was no rain in Slidell when I left at 3:30pm. While in NO EAST, I saw where it looked like it was storming around Covington going towards Slidell. Wet but no rain when I got home
