If there was such a thing as Post Flood Stress Disorder I would believe it is real.
I believe it's real. I can't describe the feeling of distress I feel whenever I think back to the helplessness of watching that water rise, then leaving home in a boat with my wife and 12 month old boy at that time. Then the boat ride to safety, when we witnessed for the first time just how bad it was, and saw the destruction around us -- it just brings back so many wounds and bad feelings. Almost a feeling of being alone, which is weird because so many experienced it with us.
No you're not. Back during the last heavy rain event we had (can't remember the date off hand), both my wife and best friend were freaking out because of another mutual friend posting videos on Facebook about how the rivers are gonna hit flood stage and just general borderline fear mongering stuff. I had to show both of them the river forecast graphs so they could see the difference between borderline flood stage and where the levels were back in August.
I'd imagine that's going to be a problem next time the rivers rise to above flood stage around here. There will be two camps:
1. Those who fear monger social media with posts about "record" flooding.
2. Those who live in flood-prone areas who say "it's not going to be bad. August was bad, this won't be bad". They'll take the threat lightly and will then flood.
As you can see at the top of this screen, there are parts of the gulf coast still being affected by storms, even though it is far from us. I was surprised to see that too after first reading your post. See you around the 12th!
Yes, I didn't realize it was still going on in other parts of the gulf coast region. Guess we'll have to wait and see what the forecast holds. Hopefully we won't all be flocking to this thread next week!

I can't speak to why they keep posing the GFS because I'm not knowledgeable enough on models but I'm pretty sure the storms aren't really getting "worse". The patterns are simply changing, allowing the more severe storms that usually form elsewhere to form closer to SELA recently. Weather is all about set ups and over the past couple years, patterns have been setting up in an unfavorable manner over us.
Looking at model soundings, atmospheric moisture levels will be EXTREMELY HIGH with precip water values near 2" as convection moves across the CWA. For reference, the 90th percentile for this time of year is less than 1.5". So hitting the 2" mark is well into record territory.
10 - 14" in a 12 hour period is what can cause significant flooding on the north shore again. I really hope we don't see that.
I'm sure it would cause some rather significant flooding on the Comite and Amite as well. Obviously not on the scale of August but there would be many homes that flooded in March and August that would flood again if this event transpires. Three times in one year - I just can't fathom.

coffeecups: Came home to Harvey from Slidell. Had a little rain here and there. There was no rain in Slidell when I left at 3:30pm. While in NO EAST, I saw where it looked like it was storming around Covington going towards Slidell. Wet but no rain when I got home
